How to Calculate a Tip in Your Head (Without a Calculator)

Back to those friends in Chicago. Bill is $147.50. Ten percent is $14.75. Double it: $29.50 for a 20% tip. If you want to be generous and round to a clean number, you could say $30, making the total $177.50. Divided by 5 people, that's $35.50 each.
