ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a character encoding standard that assigns numbers 0-127 to letters, digits, punctuation, and control characters. For example, 'A' is 65, 'a' is 97, '0' is 48. ASCII uses 7 bits per character, which fits in one byte (8 bits). It was developed in the 1960s and remains the foundation of text encoding in computers.

ASCII has only 128 characters (0-127), covering basic English text and control characters. Unicode is a much larger system with over 143,000 characters, covering all world languages, emojis, and symbols. UTF-8, a Unicode encoding, is backward-compatible with ASCII: the first 128 UTF-8 characters are identical to ASCII. Modern applications primarily use Unicode (UTF-8) while maintaining ASCII compatibility.

Binary (base 2) is fundamental to computers (0s and 1s). Octal (base 8) was historically used in computing for its compact representation. Decimal (base 10) is what humans use daily. Hexadecimal (base 16) is widely used in programming for colors (#FF0000), memory addresses, and as a compact way to represent binary (each hex digit = 4 binary bits).

Hexadecimal uses digits 0-9 and letters A-F (where A=10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, F=15). For example, 2F in hex equals (2×16) + 15 = 47 in decimal. The prefix 0x is often used: 0xFF = 255. Hex is popular because it's compact: the 8-bit binary 11111111 is just FF in hex.
