You've probably been asked your age at some point and given a number that felt slightly off — because birthdays don't land on January 1st, years have different lengths, and "how old are you" is a deceptively complicated question. The age difference between two people is even trickier. It's not just the gap between two years. It's years, months, and days, all calculated against real calendar dates that include leap years, months of different lengths, and time zones if you want to get really precise about it.
Age Difference in Different Cultures
Not every culture calculates age the same way. In South Korea, for instance, everyone becomes one year older on New Year's Day rather than their birthday, and newborns are considered one year old at birth. Under this system, someone born on December 31st becomes two years old the next day. The gap between a Korean age reckoning and a Western one can be 1 or 2 years depending on when in the year you're measuring.
East Asian age reckoning is still used informally in everyday conversation in several countries, even where Western age has become the legal standard. So if you're comparing ages across cultures, the birth dates matter — but so does the system being used to count them.
The Difference Across Time
Here's a subtlety worth noting: the age difference between two people isn't fixed in time. Well, it is — two people born 2,431 days apart will always be 2,431 days apart. But how that gap feels and how it expresses in years and months shifts depending on when you're measuring. Two people who are 10 years apart in their 20s often feel far more different in life stage than the same two people in their 60s.
Ever wonder why relationships that seem mismatched by age in youth become unremarkable as people get older? Part of it is absolute versus relative difference. A 10-year gap between a 20-year-old and a 30-year-old represents 50% of the younger person's life. Between a 50-year-old and a 60-year-old, it's only 20%. The absolute number of days is exactly the same. The relative magnitude is completely different.
